Magic U23 Make it 3 in a Row, 18's Unfortunate Monday, September 14, 2009 (0 reads)
On a hot Sunday in September, U23's made it 3 Major
Premierships in a row. It was a tough match, with both keepers getting
a work out, however it was Edgie who broke the deadlock. A few shrewd
subs by out-going coach Chris Turner with Roger Dowdell and Taiki
Nakayama stretching the Edgie defense and Cameron Aspinall supporting
behind. Magic were unlucky to level soon after when Roger pounced on a
Dean Conway fumble but was somehow ruled offside in the scramble. But
the Magic kept coming and there was an ominous feeling around the
ground as it became more and more apparent that it was a case of when
rather then if Magic would equalize. And equalize we did through a
Roger Dowdell jab into the side netting. Redemption came with 3 minutes
remaining for Taiki Nakayama. Taiki made no mistake and struck the ball
through the crowd of legs at a corner to ripple the net sending the
putters and irons flying into the air ( First Grade Silly Sunday
reference there). A great effort from all the boys, showing heart,
determination and never doubting the result. Special mentions go to;
Mark Jones having missed the 2007 and 2008 Grand Finals through injury,
third time was the charm. A class act Gilbert Afful was beaming when
taking photos with his young son holding his third Reserve Grade
medallion. Lion heart Joshua Small took out the players player award,
his tireless work rate, awareness and positioning set the foundation
for all midfield advances.
Under 18's took on Hamilton earlier
in the day, no 1 team dominated this match and penalties looked a
definite possibility. Both teams lacked that final polish, a great one
on one save by Magic Stand-in Keeper Matty Zuccon when the Hamilton
attacker seemed the freeze only yards off the line. Down the other end
Magic were getting no luck with many Diaz and Radford runs being
flagged under the tighest of margins. The addition of Mitchell O'Dell
saw some good passing build up behind the strikers, but it was hamilton
long ball and a dubious line call that broke the hearts of the Magic
Youth. When the Hamilton attacker dribbled to the line and cut back
after the ball crossed the line by almost a foot, a sick feeling into
the hearts of all the boys in red. The disappointment was evident at
full time, the boys were gutted, and the linesman was still trying to
make it to the by-line in time. The boys will be better for the
experience however, these are a talented group of guys that truly
demonstrated through the year that there's no "I" in team. Well Done
Magic. |
