Magic Intra-Club Challenge There
are a few dates on the calendar that become synonymous with hard work, mate-ship
and passion; January 26th Australia Day, 25th April ANZAC Day, State of Origin
1,2&3 to name a couple. A new date has been etched in the memories of
Broadmeadow Magic players- May 24th. On this date in history Magic players drew
the line in the sand, Assistant coach Glen "Chappy" Chapman Vs Head
Coach Peter "Guinno" McGuinness. Each commander chose their soldiers,
small sided games was the battle front.
The washed out fixture to West Wallsend
on wednesday night presented an opening to host round 1 instead of the usual
tuesday night grind session at the athletics ground. What started off as a
small sided game quickly erupted into a full blown battle. Young Ben
Higgins' shins were a testament to the intensity of the game with only The
Don's sacred oak having more cherry's on it. Adrian "Kara"
Karakolevski had the unenviable task of officiating.
The pitch was in a below
par condition but it was Chappy's boys who took an early lead through Ben
Martin and Chris Wheeler. Guino's boys stayed in touch wiht a few class strikes
from Justin Tannock and Cameron Sullini, but it was upto Scott Petit who has
recovered remarkably from tough bout of glandular fever to seal the match. The
game ended in controversy. Chapman was furious with the goal decision
contesting it to the final with referee Karakolevski.
Chappy was said to
be a shattered man, thinking the game should have ended still at 2-2 sources
close to the Chapman camp were quoted using terms such as 'diabolical' and
'joke' with regards to the refereeing. Not phased about his partiality on the
night referee Kara can be spotted celebrating with the winning team below. When
asked at a later date about his sides multiple changes Chapman was revealed he
was "speechless', we had all the ball but just could not execute in the
final third...the boys should not get too comfortable in their current roles as
again we will be making drastic changes to ensure we win".
When asked
about the outcome of the game McGuinness management representative Grahame
Hamilton simply stated "winners are grinners". Contacting the
Magic website after the game Guinno wished to pass on this message "I
knew we had it in us, the result had been coming for a few weeks now, well done
boys".
