First Grade
Magic v Edgeworth is one of the seasons most anticipated clashes. After
last weeks first win of the season the Magic boys realised that there
was more riding on this game than normal. Magic started the game with
plenty of desire and this showed as we continually created good
goalscoring opportunities from the outset. A great passage of play saw
Peter Haynes break from the right and he made no mistake with a clinical
finish. Magic 1-0 Edgeworth were still reeling from the Magic onslaught
and a speculator long ball into the box saw the Magic keeper make a
fatal mistake by coming off his line when the defense seemed to have
things well under control. The Edgy striker nodded the ball over
Scotty's head and it was 1-1. Still Magic took back control of the game
and went in at halftime knowing they could have been a few more goals
up.
The second half saw us once again dominate the game but another bit of
sloppy defending saw Edgy sneak home another soft goal. This gave
Edgeworth some confidence but Magic clawed their way back into the game
quickly to once again control it. It was time for a change and Tony
Majurovski was bought into the attack. A searching ball from the right
into the back stick saw a bit of a scramble with Tony Maj getting a toe
on the ball for the equaliser. Rather than sit back for a draw the boys
continued to attack the tiring Edgeworth side but our luck ran out as
full time came. Magic 2 Edgy 2.
Reserve Grade
Magic knew Egeworth would be tough to beat with the visitors just behind
Magic on the table and Edgworth’s recognised defensive record and ability
To graft out draws. In the early exchanges the clever passing game of Magic
again appeared to be the key with midfielder Ben Kantarovski tireless.
It was his pass midway through the first half that saw Simon Mooney
crack a fine shot and give Magic the lead.
Playing three across the back worked well as the defensive trio looked very safe moving the ball into the midfield who were creating space in the attacking half. Ibi Khodary
slotted Magic’s goal number two after seemingly running out of space on
the 18 yard box before slicing the ball past Edgeworth’s keeper. The
visitors struck back with a fine header from a set piece on their first
real visit to our 6 yard box but three minutes later Martins rich vein
of scoring continued after a feed from Mooney to make it 3-1 and it was
Mooney taking his second goal after gritty work along the goal line to see what was apparently an unbeatable 4-1lead at half time.
Magic looked lethargic as the second half began and Edgeworth quickly
took the advantage and by pushing extra attackers forward they claimed
two goals in three minutes and leveled the score at 4-4 with 20 minutes still to
play. It was game on. However it was clear the boys were playing for
each other and the supporters as they dug in to repel a series of
dangerous raids by Edgeworth . Magic stuck to their guns passing fluidly
and with 2 minutesleft on the clock a passing movement that began inside our defensive
third saw Ben Martin slot the winner 5-4.
